What are the Different Levels of Addiction Treatment?

There are many levels of addiction treatment to ensure everyone gets the treatment they need, depending on their unique circumstance and story. Knowing the different levels of addiction treatment can make the process of entering a rehab facility less scary.

In total, there are five levels of care for substance abuse treatment. These levels span intervention steps to outpatient care. All levels of care for treatment of substance abuse disorders are designed to be safe and help individuals take back their lives and live soberly.

Keep reading to learn more about the five levels of addiction treatment, as well as how to get started on your journey to recovery.

5 Levels Of Addiction Treatment

  1. Intervention

All addiction treatment begins with some sort of intervention. Some interventions are done by the individuals themselves, whereas others are done with the support of friends and family members. The goal of intervention is to show that the individual needs medical help for their addiction.

  1. Medically Managed Inpatient Services

The most intensive level of care for substance abuse treatment is medically managed inpatient services. With this service, the individual will have access to 24-hour treatment under the watchful eye of medical and clinical monitoring. Medically managed inpatient services are designed for medical detox and those who are in intensive care.

  1. Residential Services

Similar to medically managed inpatient services are residential services. Residential services are also 24/7 treatments, and patients will have access to 24/7 medical care. However, patients will have the opportunity to do other things at the facility, such as exercise or relax outside.

  1. Intensive Outpatient Services

Intensive outpatient services, sometimes called partial hospitalization services, are when patients receive between 9 and 20 hours of rehab services within one week. The purpose of intensive outpatient services is for patients to still have frequent access to medical resources while still being able to live their life outside of the facility.

  1. Outpatient Services

The least intensive level of addiction treatment is outpatient services. Outpatient services allow the individual to maintain their daily lives, but they will also meet with physicians and follow-ups to maintain their substance use disorder. Typically, outpatient services require no more than 9 hours of treatment a week.

Addiction Treatment Never Ends

Even though there are generally 5 levels of addiction treatment, addiction treatment never really ends. It’s imperative for individuals who suffer from substance abuse disorder to receive continuum care. With continuum care, patients receive substance abuse levels of care, and they maintain that care after beginning a life of sobriety.

If you or a loved one has successfully made it out of the five levels mentioned above, it’s important to continue seeking treatment. The treatment might not be as extensive as the traditional levels, but it’s still important to maintain your sobriety and actively work towards a life of sober living.
